Bio description: My name is Julie Ciotola. I graduated summa cum laude from Ohio University with a degree in journalism and a minor in history. I had a fulfilling experience in college that was enhanced by the passionate professors who taught me how to become a better writer. To me, having passion is the most fundamental aspect of teaching/tutoring. I've always found that the best teachers are those who genuinely love the subjects they're explaining, and that is the exact approach I take with tutoring. I have worked as a journalist, student magazine editor-in-chief, and peer editor for student English and history papers. As editor-in-chief for my college magazine, I oversaw a staff of more than 40 student journalists and learned how to act as a leader, editor, and friend. This position taught me that every student/writer has a different learning style, and it is critical to listen to the student's needs and adapt your teaching style as appropriate. I learned similar skills as a peer editor for English and history students, and I also expanded my understanding of how to write a compelling research paper complete with a thesis, topic sentences, and supporting examples. Currently, I am working as an online tutor for several students who need assistance with writing, reading comprehension, and editing. I have extensive experience in research, essay writing, reading comprehension, vocabulary, punctuation, grammar, citations, and more. When tutoring in English and writing, my approach is to guide students along in finding their own voice. I do not believe in simply rewriting a paper or using my style/voice to fix something. I genuinely believe we all have a story to tell through our writing and we can all learn something through reading literature. It is my goal to help students see this as well. I have lesson plans I typically follow, though I am always open to parent/student suggestions on supplemental material. I am a firm believer that the best way to become a better writer is to read, so I almost always have a story/essay each lesson for students to read.
