Bio description: The reason that I became a teacher is that I love to teach new ideas and watch students understand them. There is a feeling of accomplishment and joy when this happens. I have been able to make sure that content and learning are fun and educational. I taught World History to 6th and 7th graders at the Oakland School of Language in East Oakland, CA during this past school year. Before that, I taught World History, U.S. History and English at Cesar Chavez Community School in Woodland, CA, which is run by the Yolo County Office of Education. Before that, I taught at Dan Jacobs, a school inside the Yolo County Juvenile Detention facility. And prior to this, I was briefly a teacher at a community day school under the Vallejo County Office of Education. For a number of years, I was teaching at Bridge Academy with the Alameda County Office of Education. Bridge is a continuation high school in an alternative education environment. Also under the Alameda County Office of Education, I taught social science full time at CalSafe Fruitvale, a school for teenage mothers and expectant teens, beginning in 2012. Before I got into alternative education, I was a full time social studies teacher for five years with the West Contra Costa Unified School District at two mainstream, comprehensive high schools, where I taught a variety of kids from all types of backgrounds, including at-risk students. I am well rounded and well versed in teaching adults (see below) and kids from different backgrounds and experiences. In addition, I have taught English Language Learners in a variety of settings, from Korea to high schools here in Oakland and El Cerrito, where a large part of the population are English learners. I have learned and used a great deal of effective techniques to reach English learners that are both fun and engaging, which allows them to understand the concepts that are vitally important for success in American society. In Korea, I taught ESL at a small, private academy from 5th graders to adults. I earned a Master's degree from San Francisco State University in political science with an emphasis in political theory. I currently hold a Single Subject Teaching Credential in the social sciences which expires on July 1, 2023. I attended the teaching credential program at Cal State-East Bay, Concord Branch--formerly Hayward State--in 2004/05.
